Maxim Storms explores in his theater work the tension between tragic and comic absurdity. His visual performances are abstract magnifications of profoundly human inner stirrings. The anecdotal is always reduced to a minimum to create space for the unspeakable, the inexplicable, the poetic. His work – as well as his presence as a performer – is dangerously funny. 

Through a physical performance style and a rhythmic language, Maxim has occupied a unique place in the contemporary Flemish theater landscape for about a decade. He creates visual theater that flirts with elements from dance, clownery, and music alike. I

Maxim’s work takes on meaning through montage. The kneading and shaping creates something magical. In all his performances he is interested in beings – human or otherwise – who either have a goal or who don’t know what to do and are thus inclined to take spontaneous action. The characters’ condition is conveyed by means of form or performance style. He will never choose a straight-forward, clear-cut character. Everything is fluid and deviates from the norm.

In the creation of his theatre work for adults, he is able to draw on his experience as a musician-performer with Brik Tu-Tok and as a performer-maker with Ballet Dommage. The common thread throughout his work: a poker face with a moustache, flawless timing and comedic collages. In recent years, Maxim (together with co-creators such as Katrien Valckenaers and Lobke Leirens) has earned no fewer than five selections for Het TheaterFestival and Circuit X. For NUGGETS, he received the Theater Award from the Actors' Guild in 2023 for most appreciated acting performance under 35. Since 2025, Maxim has been part of EMERGE, a platform for cultural and artistic collaboration between northern France, Wallonia, and Flanders. During the 2025–2026 season, he is artist-in-residence at Cultuurcentrum Brugge, the cultural center of his hometown.

In the near future, he will begin developing Itchy Itchy, a new solo project on the intersection of music and theater.

In both 2025–2026 and 2026–2027, Maxim will revive his solo NUGGETS. On 6 March 2026, Marshmallow BBQ premiered, a new production with Lobke Leirens. Marshmallow BBQ is a hallucinatory comic drama in the grotesque style of an old horror film, and explores the allure of fear.
